Yes, you still need travel insurance for New Zealand, even though Australians get more help there than almost anywhere else. The reciprocal health care agreement gives access to public hospital care, and New Zealand's Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) covers hospital treatment costs after an accident. But the agreement does not pay for flights home or for family to travel, ACC cover ends once you leave New Zealand, neither covers cancelled bookings, lost luggage or a damaged hire car, and Smartraveller says plainly that neither replaces travel insurance.
New Zealand's risks are also specific: ski fields, adventure activities, winter roads and a constant earthquake and volcanic risk. The right policy is comprehensive cover for New Zealand, with the snow option if you are heading to the slopes.

As at 28 September 2026, Smartraveller's advice for New Zealand (page updated 22 July 2026) is to exercise normal safety precautions, and health facilities are similar to Australia's. Smartraveller also notes an increased measles risk, so check your vaccinations before you go.
Two arrangements help Australians in New Zealand. Both are useful, both are narrower than people assume.
| Arrangement | What it covers | What it does not cover |
|---|---|---|
| Reciprocal Health Care Agreement | Medically necessary public hospital care, maternity care and pharmaceuticals, within 2 years of arrival; bring your passport and Medicare card | GP visits, ambulance travel, ongoing treatment of existing conditions, family flights or accommodation, flights to Australia |
| ACC (accident compensation) | The costs of hospital treatment if you are injured in an accident, on a no-fault basis | Anything after you leave New Zealand; it also means you generally cannot sue for the injury |
| Travel insurance | Medical costs the public system does not pay, evacuation and flights home, cancellation, luggage, rental vehicle excess | Whatever the policy excludes, such as undeclared conditions or snow sports without the option |
After a serious injury in New Zealand, the biggest bill can be getting you home rather than the hospital, which the public system and ACC may cover. The reciprocal agreement does not pay for flights to Australia or for family flights and accommodation, and ACC cover ends once you leave, so a stretcher or medical escort on a commercial flight, or an air ambulance, falls to you or your travel insurer.
Then there is everything that is not medical. Ski season bookings and adventure tours are often prepaid and non-refundable, winter weather closes roads and airports, and campervan and car hire excesses are high. Those are travel insurance claims, not health claims.
New Zealand's ski fields and adventure industry are a large part of why Australians go, and they are where policies are most selective. Snow sports need the snow option. Bungee, jet boating, skydiving and other adventure activities may be covered, covered only with an option, or excluded. Smartraveller notes that serious accidents and deaths have occurred on adventure activities, some operators have been negligent, and it recommends carrying a personal locator beacon when trekking. Check the activities list in the PDS for everything you plan to do.
You can drive in New Zealand on your Australian licence for up to 12 months. Smartraveller warns about ice, snow and fog, narrow unpaved ski-field roads, and the need for snow chains or a four-wheel drive in some conditions. Rental vehicle excess cover is one of the most useful parts of a New Zealand policy, but many policies exclude campervans and motorhomes or cap the vehicle type, and damage on unsealed roads is a common exclusion. Check both before you pick up the keys.
Smartraveller describes earthquakes as a constant risk in New Zealand, alongside tsunamis, flash floods, bushfires and volcanic activity at Ruapehu, Tongariro and Whakaari (White Island). Cancellation and additional expenses cover can respond to a natural disaster, but only if the policy was bought before the event was known.
Most Australian citizens need no visa to visit New Zealand, and Australian citizens are exempt from the NZeTA electronic travel authority; Australian permanent residents who are not citizens need one. Everyone must complete the free New Zealand Traveller Declaration before passport control. Some policies treat New Zealand as part of a Pacific or nearby-overseas region, which can be cheaper than worldwide cover, so check which region your quote uses.
Yes. The reciprocal health care agreement and ACC help with public hospital and accident treatment, but the agreement does not cover flights home or GP visits, ACC ends when you leave, neither covers cancellation, luggage or rental car damage, and Smartraveller says they don't replace travel insurance.
Smartraveller says ACC covers the costs of hospital treatment if you are injured in an accident in New Zealand, on a no-fault basis. Cover ends once you leave New Zealand, and it does not replace travel insurance.
Medicare itself does not cover you overseas, but the reciprocal agreement gives Australians medically necessary care in New Zealand public hospitals, including maternity care, within 2 years of arriving. It does not cover GP visits or ambulance travel.
No. New Zealand is an overseas destination, so you need international cover. Some insurers group it with the Pacific in a cheaper region than worldwide cover.
Only with a snow sports option. Standard policies usually exclude skiing and snowboarding, and off-piste skiing is often excluded even with the option.
