Alinta Energy: ownership, plans and where it sells

Alinta Energy changed hands in 2026. Singapore's Sembcorp Industries completed its acquisition of 100% of Alinta on 11 June 2026, buying it from Hong Kong's Chow Tai Fook Enterprises, which had owned it since 2017. Alinta says it has around 1.1 million customers and continues to trade under its own brand and management.

Alinta began in Western Australia, where it remains a major gas retailer, and sells electricity and gas on the east coast in NSW, Victoria, Queensland and SA. This page covers its ownership, size, where it sells and regulator actions, from public sources. We do not rate retailers.

Alinta in Western Australia

In WA, households cannot choose their electricity retailer on Western Power's network, but every gas customer can choose a gas retailer, and Alinta is one of the retailers competing for them. If you are in Perth or the South West, gas is where comparing retailers can save you money; see our WA page for how the WA market works.

Regulator actions

In November 2025 Alinta paid $1,089,000 across a record 15 AER infringement notices for allegedly overcharging customers who paid through Centrepay and failing to notify and refund them within the required time. The AER said the conduct affected electricity and gas customers in NSW, Queensland and SA between April 2019 and September 2024.

How to check Alinta's plans against the market

Retailers must publish their generally available plans to the government comparators: Energy Made Easy in NSW, Queensland, SA, Tasmania and the ACT, and Victorian Energy Compare in Victoria. Each plan there has a standard fact sheet listing every rate, fee and discount condition, which is the fairest way to line Alinta's plans up against everyone else's.

Start with how far below the reference price each plan is (the Default Market Offer in NSW, south-east Queensland and SA, or the Victorian Default Offer), then run your own annual usage from a recent bill through the shortlist. The same retailer can be among the cheapest in one network zone and not in another.
