Compare car insurance in South Australia
To compare car insurance in South Australia, choose a cover level, then get quotes from several insurers for the same car, drivers, excess and valuation. Your CTP comes with your registration, and since 1 July 2019 you choose which approved insurer provides it, but that is separate from the optional policy that pays for damage to cars and property.
South Australia's numbers are gentler than the eastern states: 87 road deaths and 3,414 motor vehicle theft victims in 2025, both slightly down. The risks that do bite here are hail over Adelaide's northern suburbs and the distances once you leave the city. Here is how those shape what you should buy.

Compulsory cover in South Australia
In South Australia, "third party insurance" can mean compulsory third party (CTP), which covers injuries and is paid when you renew your registration, or optional third party property damage, which covers other people's cars and property.
You choose your CTP insurer from five approved insurers each time you renew, and your renewal notice compares their premiums. See CTP insurance in South Australia, or how CTP works in every state.
South Australian car insurance at a glance
State-level facts from federal and South Australian sources, as they apply to insuring a car.
SA CTP covers injury to people and pays nothing towards your car or anyone else's; you choose one of five approved insurers each time you renew your registration, so to choose or switch, compare SA CTP insurers. The rest of this page is about the optional cover you buy separately for damage and theft.

What moves premiums in South Australia
Theft is lower than the eastern states: 3,414 victims in 2025, about 5% of the national total, and a smaller share taken from homes (45%) than in NSW, Queensland or WA. That helps SA premiums, but it does not remove the theft risk for popular target models, and insurers price by postcode as well as by state.
Weather is the bigger swing factor. In late October 2021 a severe storm with large hailstones hit Adelaide's northern suburbs and the Barossa Valley, and the Insurance Council records 38,900 motor claims from that event across South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. A single afternoon like that is exactly what comprehensive exists for, and it is not covered by third party fire and theft.
Car insurance in Adelaide
Adelaide drivers face the usual city mix of collisions, parking damage and theft, plus hail exposure in the northern suburbs and hills. The Insurance Council's records show damaging hail over Adelaide in 1991, a November 2016 storm across SA, Victoria and NSW with $597 million in losses, and the October 2021 event.
When comparing car insurance in Adelaide, check that the policy's garaging address and parking details are accurate, because they feed straight into the theft and hail rating, and look at the hire car and choice of repairer terms, which decide how long you are without a car after a big storm.
Regional SA and the distances
Beyond Adelaide the risk becomes distance. A breakdown or crash on the Eyre Highway or in the Flinders Ranges can leave you hundreds of kilometres from a repairer. Standard roadside assistance towing allowances are designed around city breakdowns, so check the towing limit, emergency accommodation and travel home benefits in the policy itself, and consider RAA roadside membership if you drive long distances often. Animal strikes are an accident with no other party to claim against, so only comprehensive covers them.
How to find cheaper car insurance in SA
The same rules apply in every state, but these matter most for South Australians:
- Compare quotes with matching excess, drivers and agreed or market value, so you are comparing price rather than cover.
- Check the premium at every renewal. ASIC-commissioned research found 74% of people with a renewal notice were quoted more than the year before.
- Ask your insurer for a better price before you switch. Almost one in three people who asked got a lower premium without reducing cover.
- Pay annually if you can. Instalments can cost 10% to 20% more over the year, according to Moneysmart.
- Declare accurate annual kilometres. If you mostly drive around Adelaide, a lower distance estimate can reduce the premium; overstating it wastes money and understating it risks a claim.
Road safety in South Australia
South Australia recorded 87 road deaths in 2025, down from 89 in 2024 and 117 in 2023, a rate of 4.6 per 100,000 people against a national 4.8. The figures swing year to year in a smaller state, but the pattern of single-vehicle crashes on country roads is consistent nationally: BITRE recorded 675 single-vehicle fatal crashes in Australia in 2025 against 547 involving more than one vehicle. For insurance, that is a reminder that comprehensive is the only level that covers damage to your own car when nobody else is involved.
What to watch for
- SA CTP covers injury to people only. Vehicle damage needs optional cover.
- Hail over the northern suburbs and hills is the event that catches third party fire and theft holders out.
- Check towing limits and accommodation benefits if you drive beyond Adelaide. City-sized allowances run out quickly in the regions.
- Keep your garaging address and parking details accurate. They feed the theft and hail rating directly.
Common questions
What is the best car insurance in South Australia?
The best policy is the one that covers the risks you actually face at a price you can sustain. For most SA drivers with a car they could not easily replace, that is comprehensive with an excess they can afford. Compare several insurers' quotes with identical cover to see the real price difference.
Who has the cheapest car insurance in SA?
It varies by driver. Insurers weigh postcode, age, car and claims history differently, so the cheapest for one driver is not the cheapest for another. Comparing like-for-like quotes is the only reliable way to find yours.
Does CTP cover my car in South Australia?
No. CTP covers injury to people only. Damage to your car, or to other people's cars and property, needs optional insurance.
Is car insurance cheaper in Adelaide than Sydney or Melbourne?
It often is for a similar driver and car, because theft and claim frequency are lower in SA than in the larger eastern cities. It is not guaranteed; your postcode, car and history decide your price.
About the figures on this page
Road deaths are calendar-year counts from BITRE; theft figures are victims of motor vehicle theft recorded by police, published by the ABS; catastrophe claims are from the Insurance Council of Australia. We do not quote premiums, because prices change constantly and depend on your car, postcode and driving history. Compulsory injury cover is explained in our CTP guides for each state.
