Energy discounts for seniors and pensioners, by retailer
As at 10 October 2026, three energy retailers publish electricity plans just for Seniors Card holders: AGL (Seniors Saver, in NSW, south-east Queensland, SA and Victoria), EnergyAustralia (Seniors Offers in NSW, south-east Queensland and Victoria) and ENGIE (ENGIE Seniors, in the same four states as AGL). We found no seniors electricity plan from Origin Energy, Alinta Energy, Red Energy or 16 other retailers in the plans retailers publish to Energy Made Easy and Victorian Energy Compare. Alinta's one seniors offer is on gas in WA: Fair Go 46, for WA Seniors Card members in the Perth region.
A seniors plan is worth having only if it beats the best plan you could get anyway, so this page shows what each costs at standard usage against the reference price and against the same retailer's own general plan. For most pensioners the bigger help is the state energy concession, which is paid whichever retailer you choose; the second half of this page lists each state's.

Does Origin Energy have a seniors discount?
Not as a seniors plan: we found no Origin plan for Seniors Card holders in its published plans or on its website on 10 October 2026, and no current plan called the Origin Energy Seniors Discount. In South Australia, households receiving the SA energy concession can take up the SA Concessions Energy Discount Offer, an arrangement between the SA Government and Origin, with a guaranteed 20% off Origin's standard electricity usage and supply charges, 15% off gas, flexible payment options and no exit fees. The SA Government notes you must switch to Origin to get it and should compare it with your current plan first. See our Origin Energy profile.
State energy concessions for seniors and pensioners
Every state pays an energy concession or rebate to eligible card holders, and it usually saves more than a seniors plan. Which card counts matters: several concessions exclude the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card and state Seniors Cards.
| State | Concession or rebate | Amount | Which seniors and pensioner cards count |
|---|---|---|---|
| NSW | Low Income Household Rebate; Seniors Energy Rebate | Up to $285 a year; $200 a year | Pensioner Concession Card for the Low Income Household Rebate; Commonwealth Seniors Health Card for the Seniors Energy Rebate (one or the other, not both) |
| Victoria | Annual Electricity Concession | 17.5% of usage and supply charges, after the first $171.60 of the annual bill | Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or Veterans' Affairs Gold Card; the Victorian Seniors Card and Commonwealth Seniors Health Card are not on the list |
| Queensland | Electricity Rebate | $399.47 a year (including GST) | Queensland Seniors Card, Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or Veteran Gold Card; not the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card |
| South Australia | Energy Bill Concession | Up to $291.27 a year | Eligible households on low or fixed incomes; ConcessionsSA assesses eligibility |
| ACT | Electricity, Gas and Water Rebate | $800 | Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card and some other cards; not the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card |
| WA | Energy Assistance Payment | $377.14 a year | Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card and Veterans' Affairs card holders |
| Tasmania | Annual Electricity Concession | About $673 a year | Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or Tasmanian Concession Card |
| NT | NT Concession Scheme electricity concession | Up to $1,200 a year | NT Concession Scheme members |
How to get a seniors plan or concession
When you switch or sign up:
- Ask the retailer which card the seniors plan needs, and whether there is a version for new customers only. AGL, for example, publishes Seniors Saver plans for existing and for new customers.
- Give the new retailer your concession card details so your state concession continues; it does not move automatically. In South Australia, update your details with ConcessionsSA once the first bill from the new retailer arrives.
- Check how long any guaranteed discount lasts. EnergyAustralia's seniors offers list a 12-month benefit period or contract; compare again when it ends.
- Use the cooling-off period: you have 10 business days to cancel a new market contract without penalty.
What to watch for
- A seniors plan is not always the cheapest plan in your area. Compare it with the best general plans for your usage.
- Check which card a plan or concession needs: the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card and state Seniors Cards are accepted for some and not others.
- Guaranteed discounts with a 12-month benefit period end; put the date in your calendar.
- Concessions don't follow you automatically when you switch retailer.
Common questions
Does AGL give seniors discounts?
Yes. AGL's Seniors Saver plan is for Seniors Card holders, for electricity and gas in NSW, south-east Queensland, SA and Victoria, with no contract term or exit fees, according to AGL. On 10 October 2026 its single-rate version was 6% to 16% below the reference price at standard usage.
What is the Origin Energy seniors discount?
Origin has no seniors plan as at 10 October 2026. In South Australia, households receiving the SA energy concession can get the SA Concessions Energy Discount Offer through Origin: 20% off its standard electricity charges and 15% off gas.
Does Alinta Energy offer a seniors discount?
Not on electricity: we found no seniors electricity plan in Alinta Energy's published plans on 10 October 2026. In WA, its Fair Go 46 gas offer gives WA Seniors Card members in the Perth Coastal (Metropolitan) region 46% off the usage charges of its standard residential gas price for one year. State concessions for seniors and pensioners apply whichever retailer you choose.
Does EnergyAustralia have a seniors discount?
Yes: the NSW Seniors Offer for NSW Seniors Card holders, with a 14% guaranteed discount, and the VIC Seniors Offer and QLD Seniors Offer, with 12%, as at 10 October 2026. Each lists a 12-month benefit period or contract.
What is the NSW Seniors Energy Rebate?
A $200 a year rebate on the electricity bill for NSW residents who hold a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card. It can't be combined with the Low Income Household Rebate, which Pensioner Concession Card holders can claim instead, worth up to $285 a year for retail customers.
Do pensioners get $250 for electricity?
Not as a single national payment. Each state pays its own concession, credited on the bill: for example up to $285 a year in NSW, $399.47 in Queensland and $800 in the ACT, while Victoria takes 17.5% off usage and supply charges.
Do pensioners get reduced electricity rates?
Not automatically. Pensioners can claim their state's energy concession, and Seniors Card holders can choose a seniors plan from AGL, EnergyAustralia or ENGIE, but you have to apply or sign up, and a general plan may still be cheaper.
How this page is checked
We search every listed retailer's published plans for seniors-only plans and re-check the prices monthly. We have no commercial arrangement with any retailer named, and a retailer appearing here is not a recommendation.
