Most Western Australian households cannot choose their electricity retailer. If you are connected to Western Power's network in the South West Interconnected System and use less than 50 MWh a year, which covers practically every home, Synergy supplies you at prices set by the WA Government. From 1 July 2026 the standard A1 home tariff is 33.2621 c/kWh plus a supply charge of $1.1924 a day, up from 32.3719 c/kWh and $1.1605.
Gas is different: every WA gas customer can choose a retailer, so gas is where comparison pays in WA. This page explains how WA's electricity pricing works, what you can still control, the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme for solar, and the rebates available.

WA is outside the National Electricity Market and the National Energy Retail Law. In the South West Interconnected System, which Synergy describes as running from Kalbarri in the north to Albany in the south and east to Kalgoorlie, Western Power owns the network and Synergy is the only retailer allowed to supply 'non-contestable' customers, those using under 50 MWh a year. Outside that system, Horizon Power supplies most regional and remote towns.
Both are government-owned and charge the same regulated tariffs under the Uniform Tariff Policy, so a household in Broome pays the same rate as one in Perth. The prices are set each year in the State Budget.

Even without retailer choice, you can choose between Synergy's plans. Besides the flat A1 tariff, Synergy offers a Midday Saver plan, which charges different rates at different times of day, and an electric vehicle add-on. If you can shift load into the day, or you have solar and a battery, compare Synergy's plans against your own meter data before assuming A1 is the right one.
All WA gas customers are free to choose their gas retailer, and several compete for households. Standard gas contracts are capped by a regulated maximum price, but market offers can be lower. Synergy itself cannot sell gas to small customers using less than 0.18 TJ a year. Compare gas plans on your own usage from a winter bill, since heating drives most of the cost.
WA's feed-in arrangement is the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS), paid by Synergy or Horizon Power. Synergy's published DEBS rates pay 10 c/kWh for exports between 3pm and 9pm and 2 c/kWh at other times, on the first 50 kWh exported each day. That structure rewards west-facing panels and batteries that export in the late afternoon and evening.
The WA Residential Battery Scheme adds a rebate of up to $1,300 for Synergy customers or $3,800 for Horizon Power customers, plus no-interest loans for eligible households, on top of the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount. Joining a virtual power plant is a condition.
The WA Government's Energy Assistance Payment credits eligible Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card and Veterans' Affairs card holders with $377.14 a year. Customers not billed by Synergy or Horizon Power may qualify through the Energy Concession Extension Scheme. Complaints that your retailer does not resolve go to the Energy and Water Ombudsman Western Australia.
Not if you are a typical household on Western Power's network. Customers using less than 50 MWh a year are supplied by Synergy. Outside the South West Interconnected System, Horizon Power supplies most towns. You can, however, choose your gas retailer.
