Origin Energy is Australia's largest energy retailer by residential electricity customers in the states under the national energy rules. It is an Australian company listed on the ASX and reported 4.94 million customer accounts in its 2026 full-year results. It sells electricity and gas to households in NSW, Victoria, south-east Queensland, South Australia and the ACT.

Origin sells flat-rate and time-of-use plans, solar and battery packages, and runs a virtual power plant called Loop, which the AER cites as an example of retailers linking plans to home batteries. It also markets an EV plan. Since 1 July 2026 it must offer the Solar Sharer plan, with three hours of free midday power, in NSW, south-east Queensland and SA. In 2024–25 the Federal Court ordered penalties totalling $12 million against Origin companies for breaches of their life support obligations under the national retail rules, in proceedings brought by the AER, and Origin gave a court-enforceable undertaking. In the same year Origin paid $135,600 for two AER infringement notices over alleged breaches of the overcharging rules.
Retailers must publish their generally available plans to the government comparators: Energy Made Easy in NSW, Queensland, SA, Tasmania and the ACT, and Victorian Energy Compare in Victoria. Each plan there has a standard fact sheet listing every rate, fee and discount condition, which is the fairest way to line Origin's plans up against everyone else's.
Start with how far below the reference price each plan is (the Default Market Offer in NSW, south-east Queensland and SA, or the Victorian Default Offer), then run your own annual usage from a recent bill through the shortlist. The same retailer can be among the cheapest in one network zone and not in another.
