Compare gas plans: gas retailers by state and how to compare

To compare gas plans, take a full year of your own gas bills, including winter, and run them through your state's government comparator: Energy Made Easy in NSW, Queensland, SA and the ACT, or Victorian Energy Compare in Victoria. Unlike electricity, gas has no Default Market Offer, so no gas plan carries a reference price percentage, and the cheapest plan depends heavily on how much gas you burn for heating.

This page lists the gas networks and retailers in each state, explains how gas plans are priced, how to compare them and dual fuel deals, the gas concessions, and whether gas or electricity is cheaper to run.

Gas retailers by state

You choose your gas retailer; the network that carries the gas is set by your address. These are the retailers with residential gas customers in each state:

How gas plans are priced

A gas plan has a daily supply charge and usage rates in cents per megajoule (MJ), often in blocks where the rate changes after a set amount of use in the billing period. The fact sheet for each plan sets out the blocks.

There is no DMO or VDO for gas, so there is no regulated reference price to rank plans against outside WA, where retailers cannot charge more than a regulated maximum on a standard contract. That makes your own usage the only fair yardstick.

How to compare gas plans

Steps that work in every state:

  • Add up a year of gas use in MJ from four quarterly bills (or the bill's annual figure), making sure a winter bill is included.
  • Enter it in Energy Made Easy or Victorian Energy Compare, which rank every generally available gas plan for your postcode on your usage.
  • Check the block structure: a plan with a low first-block rate can suit a small user and cost a heavy heater more.
  • Compare the price without conditional discounts unless you're sure to meet the condition every bill.
  • Claim your gas concession: the NSW Gas Rebate (up to $110 a year), Queensland's Reticulated Natural Gas Rebate ($96.45) or Victoria's Winter Gas Concession (17.5% from 1 May to 31 October).

Dual fuel: is one retailer for both cheaper?

Buying electricity and gas from one retailer can come with a dual fuel discount, but it is not automatically cheaper than the best electricity plan plus the best gas plan from different retailers. Price both ways on the government comparator. Our energy hub explains how to compare the electricity side against the reference price.

Is gas or electricity cheaper to run?

With efficient electric appliances, electricity usually works out cheaper. The Victorian Government estimates that an existing Victorian home without solar can save around $1,900 a year by switching from gas to efficient electric appliances such as heat pumps and induction cooking, and around $2,230 a year with solar. Those savings come from efficient appliances, so the answer depends on what you would replace, and on the up-front cost.

The ACT has blocked new gas network connections in residential areas since 8 December 2023, and Victoria's new building electrification regulations are being phased in from 1 January 2027. Homes that already have gas can keep using it.

What to watch for

  • Compare on a full year of use including winter; a summer bill makes every plan look cheap.
  • Block rates can reward or penalise heavy use; check where your usage falls.
  • Dual fuel discounts may be conditional or end after a benefit period.
  • Tell your new retailer about your concession card when you switch.

Common questions

Who is the cheapest gas supplier?

No retailer is cheapest for every home. With no reference price for gas, the cheapest plan depends on your yearly usage and when you use it, so enter a year of bills, including winter, into Energy Made Easy or Victorian Energy Compare.

Is there a reference price for gas?

No. The Default Market Offer and Victorian Default Offer cover electricity only. In WA, retailers cannot charge more than a regulated maximum under a standard gas contract.

How do I compare gas plans?

Add up your yearly gas use in megajoules from your bills, including winter, and enter it in Energy Made Easy (NSW, Queensland, SA and the ACT) or Victorian Energy Compare. Check the block rates, conditional discounts and any benefit period before you switch.

Who is the cheapest gas supplier in Perth?

It depends on your usage. Six retailers had residential gas customers in WA at 30 June 2025, and all WA gas customers can choose their retailer; compare their offers against the regulated maximum using a winter bill. Our WA page lists them.

Is gas cheaper than electricity?

Usually not, if you compare with efficient electric appliances. The Victorian Government estimates existing Victorian homes without solar can save around $1,900 a year by switching from gas to efficient electric appliances such as heat pumps and induction cooking.
