Australia's biggest insurance companies, and who issues each brand
On APRA's latest insurer-level figures, for the six months to 30 June 2023, the three largest general insurance groups by gross earned premium on Australian business were IAG, Suncorp and QBE, followed by Allianz and Hollard. The largest life insurer was TAL, and in 2024-25 Medibank and Bupa together held more than half of the private health insurance market.
APRA hasn't published insurer-level rankings since its June 2023 editions, so every figure here carries its period. Many brands you know are issued by one of a handful of insurers: the tables show who stands behind each car, life and health insurance brand. Size isn't a quality measure, so we also show how to check an insurer's claims and complaints record.

Allianz was a close fourth and Hollard fifth. General insurance is home, car, business and travel cover; life and health insurers are regulated and counted separately, so they're shown below.
These are the June 2023 editions of APRA's insurer-level statistics, the latest APRA publishes: its pages list the next issue as "to be advised". Groups have bought and sold businesses since, so read the table as a snapshot of that period, not today's market shares.

Australia's largest health insurers
Private health insurance has more recent figures. In 2024–25, Medibank (including ahm) and Bupa each held about a quarter of the market, and with HCF, nib and HBF the five largest insurers held 82.5%. Several well-known names are brands inside one of these insurers, which is why ahm, GU Health, RT Health and see-u by HBF are counted with their parent. Each insurer links to our health fund review, which sets out its complaints, retention and benefits figures.
| Health insurer | Market share, 2024–25 | People covered by hospital policies, 30 June 2025 | Run for profit? |

| Bupa | 25.5% | 3,146,433 | Yes |

Who issues each brand
The name on the ad often isn't the insurer. The issuer named in the Product Disclosure Statement is the company that holds the licence and pays claims, and one issuer can sit behind several brands. AAI Limited, for example, issues AAMI, Apia, Bingle, GIO, Shannons and Suncorp Insurance car insurance, and Auto & General issues Budget Direct, Coles and Qantas car insurance. Moneysmart warns the same underwriter might sell policies with identical cover at different prices under different brand names, so quotes from brands with the same issuer are still worth comparing.

Life insurance works the same way. Banks, health funds and retailers mostly distribute cover issued by a separate life insurer, and the issuer can change when a book of policies is sold.

Size isn't quality: how to check an insurer
The tables rank insurers by premium, nothing else. A large insurer can still have a lower claims admittance rate for the cover you're buying, longer claim times or more complaints. Before you buy, check the issuer on your PDS against the official records:
- Life insurance and income protection: Moneysmart'slife insurance claims comparison toolshows each insurer's claim acceptance rates, claim times and disputes, from APRA data.
- Health insurance: the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman'sState of the Health Funds reportcompares complaints, member retention and benefits paid, fund by fund.
- Any insurer: the Australian Financial Complaints Authority'sDatacubelets you search complaints by firm and compare firms side by side.
Then compare the policy itself: what it covers, the excess, limits and exclusions. Our guides tocar insurance, home insurance, life insurance, income protection, health insurance andbusiness insurance set out what to check for each.
Common questions
Who are the big 3 insurance companies in Australia?
On APRA's latest insurer-level figures, for the six months to 30 June 2023, the three largest general insurance groups by gross earned premium on Australian business were Insurance Australia Group (IAG, $5,444 million), Suncorp Insurance Holdings ($5,051 million) and QBE ($3,598 million). APRA hasn't published a later insurer-level edition. Life and health insurance are measured separately: TAL is the largest life insurer, and Medibank and Bupa the largest health insurers.
What are the top 5 insurance companies in Australia?
In general insurance, by gross earned premium on Australian business in the six months to 30 June 2023 (APRA): IAG, Suncorp, QBE, Allianz and Hollard. The five largest life insurers by net policy revenue (financial years ended in the 12 months to June 2023) were TAL Life, AIA Australia, MLC, Zurich Australia and Swiss Re Life & Health Australia. The five largest health insurers by 2024-25 market share were Medibank, Bupa, HCF, nib and HBF.
Who is Australia's largest insurer?
It depends on the type of insurance. IAG had the most gross earned premium of any general insurance group in APRA's latest insurer-level figures (six months to 30 June 2023). TAL Life had the most net policy revenue of any life insurer (financial years ended in the 12 months to June 2023). In private health insurance, Medibank, including ahm, had the largest market share in 2024-25 (26.5%), just ahead of Bupa (25.5%).
Is the biggest insurance company the best?
Not necessarily. Size measures premium, not how well claims are handled or what a policy covers. For life insurance, check the insurer in Moneysmart's life insurance claims comparison tool; for health insurance, the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman's State of the Health Funds report; and for complaints about any insurer, the Australian Financial Complaints Authority's Datacube.
Who issues AAMI car insurance?
AAI Limited, according to AAMI's car insurance PDS. The same company issues Apia, Bingle, GIO, Shannons and Suncorp Insurance car insurance. The issuer is the company that pays claims, so two brands with the same issuer can still differ on price, excess and inclusions.
Who issues the life insurance sold by banks and health funds?
Usually a separate life insurer. As at 10 October 2026, CommBank's life insurance and income protection were issued by AIA Australia; Medibank's and ahm's by Zurich Australia; nib's and Budget Direct's by NobleOak; and AAMI's, Suncorp's and Westpac's by TAL. The table on this page lists each brand with a link to its issuer statement.
