How to Find the Cheapest Green Slip in NSW
There is no single cheapest Green Slip insurer in NSW. There is a cheapest one for you, and the government's own Price Check will show you which it is in a few minutes.
The cheapest Green Slip in NSW is whichever licensed insurer quotes lowest for your particular vehicle and drivers, and the only way to find it is to compare all six. The fastest way to do that is SIRA’s free Green Slip Price Check, which shows a quote from every licensed insurer side by side. Because the cover is set by law and identical everywhere, the cheapest quote is not a worse policy.
This guide explains why prices vary so much in NSW, how to use the Price Check properly, what you can and cannot change, and the mistakes that make a cheap Green Slip expensive later.
Why Green Slip prices vary so much in NSW
In Queensland, South Australia and the ACT, everyone with the same class of vehicle pays the same CTP premium to a given insurer. NSW is different: Green Slips are priced on the individual.
SIRA explains the process in two stages. First, each insurer calculates a base cost that has to cover the future claims and running costs of its whole book. Then it adjusts your price using rating factors. SIRA lists these as including:
- the age of the driver (insurers ask for the youngest driver’s age)
- driving history and demerit points
- claims history
- the vehicle’s age
- where the vehicle is parked
- whether you have comprehensive insurance
- the insurer’s overall risk in the scheme.
Insurers do not all weigh these the same way, and may use different factors altogether. SIRA says this is why you may see variations between insurers. In practice it means the insurer that is cheapest for a 20-year-old in one suburb can be the most expensive for a 60-year-old in another.
Every quote also includes GST and SIRA’s Fund Levy, which pays for crash victims’ initial ambulance and hospital costs and for the lifetime care of the most seriously injured. SIRA sets the levy, not the insurer, so it does not change when you switch. SIRA publishes the average contribution: $190.60 per policy from 15 January 2026, up from $164.80 in the previous 12 months.
Step by step: using the Green Slip Price Check
The Price Check is run by SIRA, and Service NSW links to it. It compares quotes from all insurers for the most common vehicle types.
- Choose how to identify the vehicle. Service NSW describes three options: your driver licence or registration billing number, your number plate or VIN, or entering the vehicle details, insurance and driving history yourself. The first two usually give the most accurate prices, because they use the records insurers check anyway.
- Answer the driver questions honestly. Include every driver, especially the youngest. If anyone has committed a driving offence in the past 3 years and 4 months that added demerit points, it can affect the price even if the points have since been removed, so declare it.
- Read the full list. Note the cheapest quote, but also how far apart the top two or three are.
- Buy from the insurer directly. Click through or call the insurer. SIRA recommends buying from a licensed insurer or its authorised representative, so that nobody submits inaccurate details on your behalf.
- Renew your registration. Most insurers notify Transport for NSW electronically, so you can usually renew straight away. Our guide to Green Slips and rego has the full order of steps.
What you can and cannot change
| Factor | Can you change it? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Which insurer you choose | Yes | The single biggest lever. Compare all six every renewal |
| Youngest driver’s age | Only by who actually drives | Must be accurate. Listing a false driver is under-insurance |
| Demerit points and driving history | Not in the short term | Offences in the last 3 years and 4 months can count even after points expire |
| Where the car is parked | Only if it genuinely changes | Give the real location |
| Whether you hold comprehensive cover | Yes | SIRA lists it as a factor some insurers may use; check whether it changes your quote |
| Vehicle details | No, but check they are right | A wrong year, make or model gives a wrong price |
| Policy term (6 or 12 months) | Yes, for most light vehicles | Changes how often you pay, not the cover |
| Fund Levy and GST | No | Set by SIRA and by law |

Six months or twelve?
Most light vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes can be registered for 6 or 12 months, and your Green Slip has to match the term you choose. A 6-month Green Slip spreads the cost, but compare what two 6-month policies would cost you over a year with one 12-month policy before assuming it is cheaper. Service NSW also sets a deadline for the shorter term: if you renew for 6 months, the Green Slip must be paid and the registration renewed no later than 21 days after the registration expires.
Price is not the only difference
The insurer you buy from manages claims made against your policy, including any claim you make yourself as an at-fault driver. SIRA publishes a regular CTP Insurer Claims Experience and Customer Feedback Comparison, with claims acceptance rates and customer feedback for each insurer; the latest listed is for March 2026. If two quotes are within a few dollars, it is a sensible way to choose between them.
Mistakes that make a cheap Green Slip expensive
- Understating your details. SIRA says giving wrong information can lead to an adjustment charge for the true cost, cancellation of your registration, reinstatement fees and penalties. Under-insurance is never a saving.
- Buying through an unlicensed middleman. Buy from the insurer or its authorised representative, so the details sent to Transport for NSW are the ones you gave.
- Letting it lapse. A new Green Slip has to be bought before the current one expires. An unregistered vehicle may not be covered by CTP at all.
- Forgetting the refund you are owed. If the car is written off, wrecked or stolen and you cancel the registration, you can claim back part of the unused Green Slip. Selling the car earns no refund, so price the remaining cover into the sale.
- Thinking the Green Slip covers the car. It covers injuries only. Repairs need third party property damage or comprehensive cover.
The six insurers you are choosing between
SIRA’s list, last updated 13 April 2026, names six licensed Green Slip insurers: AAMI, Allianz, GIO, NRMA, QBE and Youi. Each sells exactly the same policy. For phone numbers, how the scheme works and what it covers if you cause a crash, see our NSW Green Slip page. If you are comparing with interstate schemes, our CTP comparison by state explains why, of the four states where you choose a CTP insurer, NSW is the only one where your personal details move the price.
Frequently asked questions
Who has the cheapest Green Slip in NSW?
It depends on the vehicle and the driver. Each of the six licensed insurers weighs rating factors such as age, driving history, demerit points and where the car is parked differently, so the cheapest insurer for one person is often not the cheapest for another. SIRA's Green Slip Price Check shows every insurer's price for your details.
Why is one insurer's Green Slip so much cheaper than another's?
Because NSW insurers set their own prices for each driver's risk profile. SIRA notes that insurers may have different views on risk costs and use different rating factors, so a much lower quote reflects that insurer's pricing for your profile, not weaker cover. The benefits are the same whoever you buy from.
Are all CTP Green Slips the same?
The cover is. Every licensed insurer sells the same statutory policy under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017. Only the price, claims handling and any extras differ.
Do pensioners get cheaper Green Slips?
Insurers can take the driver's age into account, so prices for older drivers depend on the insurer; the Price Check shows every quote. Separately, Service NSW gives NSW Pensioner Concession Card holders free registration for one vehicle, which is a different charge from the Green Slip.
How can I make my Green Slip cheaper?
Compare all six insurers with the Price Check, give accurate details (especially the youngest driver's age and any demerit points), make sure the vehicle's details are right, and check whether an insurer prices differently because you hold comprehensive cover. You cannot make the Fund Levy cheaper: SIRA sets it.
Can I buy a 3-month Green Slip?
Not for most cars. Service NSW offers 6 or 12-month registration for most light vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes, and your Green Slip must match. Three-month terms are available for trailers and heavy vehicles over 4.5 tonnes.
