LoansCredit CardsPregnancy and birth is a Gold-tier clinical category. Under the tier rules introduced in 2019 it cannot be included in Basic, Bronze or Silver policies, which means private cover for birth requires a Gold hospital policy or a Silver Plus policy that specifically adds the category.
It also carries a twelve-month waiting period. Those two facts together mean the timing decision has to be made roughly a year before you need the cover, which is earlier than most people realise.
A fund can apply a twelve-month waiting period to pregnancy and birth, and in practice all of them do. Since a pregnancy runs about nine months, you generally need the policy in place before conception for it to be useful for the birth. Upgrading to Gold once you are already pregnant will not usually get you cover for that birth, though it will for a subsequent one.
Australia's public maternity system is well regarded and free for Medicare-eligible patients. Private cover buys you a named obstetrician who is present for the birth, a private room where available, and choice of hospital. It does not buy you a better clinical outcome by default. There are also meaningful out-of-pocket costs privately — obstetrician gap fees over the pregnancy are commonly the largest single expense and are not covered by your hospital policy.
A newborn needs to be added to your policy, and most funds cover them from birth provided you do so within a set window. On a family or single parent policy this is usually straightforward and does not change the premium. On a couples policy it means moving to a family policy, so check what that costs before the birth rather than after.
Twelve months, and every fund applies it. Because a pregnancy runs about nine months, the policy generally needs to be in place before you conceive for it to cover that birth.
Gold. Under the tier rules, pregnancy and birth cannot be included in Basic, Bronze or Silver policies, though some funds sell Silver Plus products that add the category above the tier minimum.
You can upgrade, but the twelve-month waiting period will generally apply from when you upgrade, so it will not usually cover that birth. It would cover a subsequent pregnancy.
