Building, contents, or both

Your renewal went up. It doesn't have to.

Home insurance renews quietly every year, usually higher than the last. We compare what the same cover costs elsewhere so you can decide whether staying is worth it.

Owners

You own it, so you insure all of it.

Building and contents together is the usual choice. We compare the combined cover rather than two separate policies that leave gaps between them.

Renters and strata

The building isn't yours. Your things are.

If you rent, or you're in strata where the body corporate covers the building, contents-only is usually all you need and costs a good deal less.

Questions people ask

Can I switch before my policy ends?

Yes. Insurers generally refund the unused portion of your premium when you cancel mid-term, so you are not locked in until renewal. Check for any cancellation fee in your product disclosure statement first.

Should I insure for what I paid or what it costs to rebuild?

Rebuild cost, which is often quite different from market value. Underinsuring is the common mistake, and some policies reduce a claim proportionally if the sum insured is too low.

Does contents cover my things outside the house?

Sometimes, and only up to a limit. Portable valuables like laptops, jewellery and bikes usually need to be listed separately if you want them covered away from home.
