Low rate, rewards and balance transfer

The right card depends on how you use it.

A rewards card is a poor deal if you carry a balance, and a low-rate card is wasted if you pay in full. Tell us how you actually use a card and we'll compare on what it costs you.

Carrying a balance

Interest is the only number that matters.

If a balance rolls over most months, the rate dwarfs everything else. Points and perks are not worth paying a high rate for.

Paying down debt

Move the debt, stop the interest.

A balance transfer can pause interest while you clear the balance. Worth checking the revert rate and whether there is a transfer fee before you move.

Paying in full

If you clear it monthly, get paid for it.

No interest means the annual fee and the earn rate decide whether a rewards card is worth holding. We compare on net value, not headline points.

Questions people ask

Does comparing cards affect my credit score?

No. Comparing is not an application and creates no enquiry on your file. Only submitting a formal application to an issuer does that.

Is a balance transfer actually worth it?

It can be, if you clear the balance within the promotional period. Check three things: the transfer fee, how long the promotional rate lasts, and what rate it reverts to afterwards.

Are rewards cards worth the annual fee?

Only if what you earn exceeds the fee, and only if you pay the card off in full. Carrying a balance on a rewards card almost always costs more than the points are worth.
