Can I keep my number?
Yes. Number portability is standard in Australia, so you keep your number when you move provider. The transfer usually takes minutes to a few hours.
Will coverage get worse on a smaller provider?
Usually not. Most smaller providers resell one of the three networks, so the coverage is the same. What can differ is data speed caps and how you are prioritised when a tower is congested, so check the plan detail.
Is a plan with a phone included cheaper?
Rarely, once you total the repayments. Buying the handset outright or bringing your own and taking a SIM-only plan is usually cheaper, though a bundled plan can suit if you would rather spread the cost.
How much data do I actually need?
Check the last few bills or your phone's usage screen. Most people overestimate, because home and work wi-fi cover a lot of it. Paying for 100GB when you use 15 is the most common mistake.
